Windows 7

Hey!

This thread is to facilitate further discussion regarding Windows 7 Build 7000 (Beta 1).

Official sounding thread descriptions aside, if you got the beta, this is the place to rave/complain about it! Post you likes/dislikes, and any cool new features (or horrible, horrible bugs) that you stumble on! (Remember to submit any and all bugs to MS. It makes for a better RTM!)

---

OK.

Likes:
-- The Aero interface is much better. It almost feels like you can reach out and grab a window, so to speak.
--The shell in general is a lot more polished.
--Aero snaps

Dislikes:
--The new taskbar. It's not that I don't like it, but I will have to get used to it.
--Some things are just slightly different enough that it annoys me. Again, I will have to adjust to it.

Things I noticed:
--When you maximize a window, the title bar doesn't turn black like in Vista.
--The little blue line on Aero windows is gone.
--The Ethernet connection icon looks like a monitor with a trident.
--Windows Media Center seems to be much better

I'll think of more later.
Vista

EDIT: One more thing. Alt-Tab doesn't have an interface anymore. (IE, alt-tab just changes windows. It doesn't bring up a window with icons/screen captures anymore)

EDIT again: Nevermind. I tried again and it does

Re: Windows 7

"OMG NEW WINDOWS!!!!!"

That much aside, I haven't found anything that I don't like or has even irked me. I just wish I had a spare halfway-decent machine to install it on other than VirtualBox. Also, the new boot-up screen is sweet!

Re: Windows 7

16Gb of HD space reuiqred!! Get out of here!

If they've sorted out the security model, I might check it out when released. Otherwise I'm probably done with Windows forever.

What privileges does the initial user have (assuming there is an "initial user")?

That kinda sums up my years of using Windows

BTW: any chance of some screenshots seeing as I can't find any that aren't from early 2008 or OS X

Well perhaps they'll do the sensible thing and do it in a Mac OS X expose style (I'm too lazy to put the accent on the last letter of expose, sorry).

Re: Windows 7

@hot_cakes: I (accidentally) installed 7 on a 20gb drive, and I have 8GB remaining. So, whatever.

As is stands now (and this *is* a beta) there are 2 users. Admin, and Standard. Standard can "Use most software, and make changes that don't effect other users."

You don't see nearly the amount of UAC prompts as in Vista. I would say that 70 to 80% of them are gone in the default setting, and you can change that setting on the fly, with 4 different levels. (see attached)

@Clam: Check out Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows. He has all the beta shots you could dream of.

By that do you mean a shell as in a terminal (command prompt) or "shell" as in Win 3 was a shell for DOS?

One thing Windows really needs is a proper terminal. Heck, that's the reason I can suffer* using OS X, it has a terminal that increases productivity, instead of hindering it.

* Suffer as in, "I suffer you to live," not, "I had to suffer through 3 years of biology."

Re: Windows 7

The command prompt is exactly the same as Vista. By "shell", I meant Windows Explorer. (as in win 3 for DOS)

That's an improvement.

Ugh. They're still there?! I'll pass unless they remove the need for them entirely.

Re: Windows 7

Well, like I said, turning it off is easy. No reboot required.
