Please Read! Major Computer Problem!
|

Hey, guys. Today's not such a great day.
I woke up, did my daily routine, and then went to turn my computer on. When I turned it on, I was surprised to see this:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for updates. Try changing video adapters.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

It's the blue screen of death. So, I tried to start in safe mode. It worked. I tried resetting my system to an earlier checkpoint. It worked, but when I turned my computer off, and then back on, I'd get the blue screen of death again. When I tried to reset it to an earlier date again, the checkpoint was gone. So now that I've run out of system checkpoints, I'm currently writing this in safe mode.
Here are my system specs:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Intel
Pentium 4 CPU 1.60GHz
1.59GHz, 512 MB of RAM.
I looked on the Microsoft troubleshooting page, installed the pack to help with this, and restarted. It didn't work.
Any ideas?

I'll see if i can provide better support when I get home, but have you tried googling the STOP error codes?

I HATE 0x0000007E. Assuming it's the one I've had to fix in the past. Do you use a Linksys USB wireless adapter? If so, unplug it and try to boot.
PS: Do you still have that sig you made for me by any chance? I seem to have misplaced it...

Haha, I might on Photobucket. Well, I'm pretty sure I don't have the wireless USB anything, so we can scratch that out.
I tried googling error codes.
As you can see, it didn't specify any drivers, so I can't very well disable them. On some followup research, I found that many people had problems with aec.sys, but that can't be my problem. Could this be caused by a virus?

Huh, then it's not the one I had trouble with. Did you just upgrade to SP3?

That would be my suggestion as well.
I don't remember the exact STOP code, but I had a similar problem with Daemon Tools. You don't use that by any chance, do you?

Naw, I don't, but I have been booting a number of Linux distros, testing each one to find an OS that fits me best, or just experimenting. I know that booting them starts a butt-load of daemons. Not sure if that did anything.
Umm, here's the package that I downloaded, but it didn't work:
WindowsXP-KB900485-v2-x86-ENU
You're gunna have to google it for the details; I gotta go. But it gives you all the details if you're interested. Anyhoo, it didn't work.
I'll try the memtest thingamabob later tonight. Good night, all.

Daemon Tools is a virtual CD drive, where you can mount CD images (.iso, among others) as if it was a physical CD. It doesn't have anything to do with the daemons (i.e. services) that Linux uses. I believe there is another similar program called Alcohol 120 or something like that. Do you use anything like that?
The reason I think it might be this is because it seems to be the exact same thing that happened to me, and a virtual CD/DVD drive was to blame. Of course, something else could just as easily be causing this.

Check your partition flags using an ubuntu live CD.
When I got an error like this, that was what was causing it.
